THE FINCA
TLAN MAKAN functions as a family business, in close cooperation with the indigenous population. The respectful involvement of the rural population, their generation-spanning experience in coffee cultivation and the harmony with nature are the pillars of the finca philosophy and the daily work. On this basis we are shaping a new orientation of agriculture and forestry for the region.
In the course of the climate change already noticeable in the early 2000s, an extensive reforestation project was started. For this purpose, different tree varieties suitable for the coffee plant and region were selected and planted from 20 countries worldwide. Coffee cultivation is therefore no longer a monoculture on TLAN MAKAN. In the meantime, more than 1.5 million trees have been planted in a region that can certainly be described as climate-relevant. Due to the very rapid growth in the tropics and suptropics, some tree varieties have already reached their full size after 10 years and can therefore bind earlier and also larger amounts of CO2 than comparable European tree varieties. Especially from today’s perspective this decision was very farsighted and is the living implementation of the philosophy of living and working in harmony with nature.
The promotion of the local population is also one of the basic principles of the Finca. Numerous educational and social projects, as well as various models of independent farming, contribute to improving living conditions and future prospects. With the work of the indigenous population and the projects of the Finca, the philosophy of the “helping hand” is brought to life in both directions.
